Today, as we continue our celebration of #BlackHis

Today, as we continue our celebration of #BlackHistoryMonth, we recognize Henrietta Lacks and the incredible impact to medical research that resulted from her cells.

Henrietta Lacks was a Black woman whose cancer cells are the source of the HeLa cell line, the first immortalized human cell line and one of the most important cell lines in medical research.
Lacks died in 1951 of an aggressive cervical cancer. Months earlier, doctors at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland had taken samples of her cancerous cells while diagnosing and treating the disease. They gave some of that tissue to a researcher without Lacks’s knowledge or consent. In the laboratory, her cells turned out to have an extraordinary capacity to survive and reproduce. As a result, many people have referred to Henrietta Lacks's life as immortal. The researcher shared them widely with other scientists, and they became one of the most significant cell lines in biological research. Today, work done with HeLa cells underpins much of modern medicine. They have been involved in key discoveries in many fields, including cancer, immunology and infectious disease. One of their most recent applications has been in research for vaccines against COVID-19.

Happy birthday to Frederick Douglass!
Today we're giving the spotlight to Frederick Douglass as we continue to celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth
Though the exact date of his birth is unknown, Frederick Douglass chose to celebrate February 14 as his birthday.
After escaping slavery in Maryland, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement. Douglass joined the American Anti Slavery Society in 1841 as an agent. His role was to travel and deliver speeches, distribute pamphlets and get subscribers to the Liberator.
Douglass was famous for his writing and campaigns. Douglass was also an advocate for women's rights, specifically the right for women to vote.

#BlackHistoryMonth is a time to remember and honor the Black leaders who left everlasting legacies and ignited a desire for hope and change.
We celebrate Black excellence with pride, not just this month, but every single day.
We're giving the spotlight to Thurgood Marshall today for Black History Month!

Thurgood Marshall was an American lawyer and civil rights activist from Baltimore, MD. Marshall served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the U.S. from 1967 until 1991.
Marshall was the first Black justice of the Supreme Court. He established a private legal practice in Baltimore before founding the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, where he served as executive director. In that position, he argued several cases before the Supreme Court, including Smith v. Allwright, Shelley v. Kraemer, and Brown v. Board of Education, the latter of which held that racial segregation in public education is a violation of the Equal Protection Clause.

February 1st marks the start of #BlackHistoryMonth! While Black history is made each and every day, please be sure to take advantage of the opportunities that arise this month to learn, expand, and grow your knowledge of Black history!
We are starting our celebration of Black History Month by recognizing American activist and poet, Amanda Gorman.
Amanda Gorman is the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history and an award-winning writer. Last year, Gorman became the first poet to perform at the Super Bowl, when she delivered her poem "Chorus of the Captains" at Super Bowl LV. Her work focuses on issues of oppression, feminism, race, and marginalization, as well as the African diaspora. Gorman was also the first person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate.
